30 March 2015
Today the Queen dissolved Parliament. I'm no longer the MP for Stratford-on-Avon, but the Conservative Candidate. It’s been an honour to serve you as your local MP these last five years, and I’ve worked hard to make sure your voice is heard, both locally and nationally. We’ve had many successes: unemployment in Stratford-on-Avon is down by over 70 percent, 2500 people have begun an apprenticeship, more rural homes have access to superfast broadband than ever before and Stratford is getting a new hospital. But there’s much more to do, and I’m campaigning for re-election because I want to make Stratford-on-Avon an even better place to live, work and raise a family. My campaign has three big priorities at its heart: 1. The best possible healthcare I passionately believe in the NHS free at the point of use, based on need not ability to pay. I’ve fought to protect local NHS spending and the strong economy needed to pay for it, and have backed plans for the new hospital for Stratford. I am committed to ensuring local NHS services are well-funded, including the resources to deliver 7-day GP access. 2. Outstanding education I want an education system which helps all young people to realise their potential, which is why I’ve worked to secure extra funding for local schools, including funding for new buildings. Over the next five years I will support the expansion of grammar schools, academies and apprenticeships, so all young people in Stratford-on-Avon get the best possible start in life. 3. Standing up for Stratford-on-Avon Over the last five years I’ve stood up for the things that make Stratford-on-Avon special: our brilliant independent businesses, our world famous tourism industry, and our beautiful countryside. Over the next five years I will contonue to back local businesses to succeed, help sort out the traffic problems which affect us everyday and contonue to fight for stronger protections for the towns, villages and countryside we all love. But you also face a national choice in May. In five years we’ve worked hard to turn this country around. Britain is now creating 1000 new jobs every day and last year we grew faster than any other major Western economy. But the job isn’t done. To secure that recovery for everyone, it’s vital that we continue working through our long-term economic plan. That means: • Getting the public finances back into black by 2018, so we can end the squeeze on spending • Supporting family budgets by cutting income tax for 30 million people • Making Britain the best place in the world to start and grow a business, so we have the strong economy to pay for the best possible public services. • Delivering more 3 million high quality apprenticeships, so our young people have the skills they need to compete • Ending uncertainty over Europe once and for all, by letting the British people decide our future in an in/out referendum by 2017 By contrast, Labour have no serious plan: only commitments for more borrowing and higher taxes. To pay for their spending plans, taxes would have to rise by £3000 for every working family. Debt would rise and jobs would be put at risk. I’m determined to stop that happening. So you face a clear choice on May 7: between economic security and economic chaos. I hope I can count on your support as we work together to secure Stratford-on-Avon’s future.
